Our Shipping and Logistics MSc will prepare graduates from a broad range of disciplines for careers across the broad and exciting shipping and logistics sectors.

About this course

Our MSc is designed for both practising professionals and new graduates from any discipline, typically (but not exclusively) including:

engineering law business economics geography IT navigation

We regularly welcome former seafarers looking to transition ashore, providing that their ticket is equivalent to the degree entry qualification requirement.

Our overall aim is to prepare you for successful entry into the global shipping and logistics industry. You'll learn about the industry and its current issues, which will enable you to successfully demonstrate your ability as a potential employee in the sector.

You will also benefit from industry site visits, including our annual field trip to London and a day spent on the School's research vessel, The Princess Royal in order to experience marine operations in practice. This is arranged as a ‘safety seminar’ and aims to give you a flavour of a day’s work at sea.

What you'll learn

This MSc is not just an extension of a Bachelor degree. It's about learning to think and operate at a professional level in a specific context. It is for this reason that the dissertation takes such a central role.

The dissertation aims to:

teach you to think for yourself provide you with the ability obtain the data and information you need enable you to judge the value and quality of that data and information build on your decision making skills

We'll provide you with significant access to industry, academic data and published materials. We expect you to use these sources fully in your work.

You will gain the widest possible context and operational ‘know how’ of shipping and logistics in the industry. This includes:

inter alia understanding the structure of the fleet and trade markets and maritime economics chartering maritime geography the basis of insurance and legal aspects of the industry logistics and supply chain management, digitisation and new technologies commercial awareness risk and financing
