The Master of Teaching in Secondary Social Studies program is for students who hold an undergraduate degree in a social studies discipline (anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, or sociology) who wish to receive secondary (9-12) teaching licensure. The program prepares students for successful teaching at the high school level.

Career Opportunities

This program prepares students to be successful social studies teachers at the high school level. As part of this preparation, students spend 50 hours in an internship during the fall semester of their final year in the program, and engage in full-time student teaching during the spring semester of their senior year.

Research Interests

Students will engage in an action research project of their own teaching in accordance with Evidence 5 of the North Carolina licensure portfolio.

Core Courses (9hr)

• TED 669, Educational Implications of Learning and Developmental Theory, or TED 622, Differentiated Instruction, or approved substitute (3hr)
• TED 545 Diverse Learners, or TED 646, Introduction to Equity Education, or approved substitute (3hr)
• ERM 605, Educational Measurement and Evaluation, or ERM 604, Methods of Educational Research, or approved substitute (3hr)

Pedagogical Expertise Courses (21hr)

• TED 553, Teaching Practices and Curriculum in Social Studies (3hr, plus a 50hr internship that turns into the student teaching placement; must be taken the Fall semester before TED680a/TED680b)
• 18 Hours of Content Courses in HIS, PSC, GEO, ECO, ATY, PSY, or SOC at the 500 or 600 level (half of which must be at the 600 level)

为来自中国的学生设计 All applicants must have obtained the following: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or appropriately-evaluated credentials for non-U.S. schools; satisfactory academic standing as an undergraduate or in a post-baccalaureate program. Non-native speakers of English must validate proficiency in the English language by one of three means: TOEFL: 79 (paper-based 550); IELTS: 6.5 Band Score; PTE: 67; and ELS: 112.
