One of the first programs of its kind worldwide, the photography program at MICA was established more than 100 years ago.
Building on this legacy, the program today thoroughly examines both film and digital photography while encouraging a diversity of approaches. Students master technical skills as they work in state-of-the-art digital facilities, learn traditional and alternative darkroom processes, and develop a deep understanding of the medium's history and contemporary directions.
Our Facilities
The facilities in the photography department provide a professional workspace, including state of the art digital labs, a professional lighting studio and portable lighting systems, fully equipped traditional black and white darkrooms, and facilities for antiquarian and alternative processes. The department's courses and facilities also serve students in other majors who have met course prerequisites.
The Photography major at MICA approaches the discipline as a fine arts medium with a curriculum that thoroughly examines all aspects of both traditional and digital photography. You will develop strong technical skills and a deep understanding of photography's history and contemporary directions as you learn black-and-white printing and experiment with non-traditional processes, master the large format camera, and use the latest digital technology.
The sequence of courses guides students to build skills and explore the wide range of possibilities in photography. The required seminar, Contemporary Directions in Photography, investigates the production of photo-based media during the last 50 years, and an internship in a photography-related area is required for all majors. Recent internships have provided students with real-world experience in the full array of careers available in the field, including work in the studios of professional photographers, museums, newspapers, magazines, galleries, and medical institutions.
