专业概况

Civil engineering technologists plan, design and supervise the construction of infrastructure and facilities. Their projects include high-rise buildings, highways, mass transit systems, tunnels, dams, bridges, airports, water treatment facilities and sewage treatment plants. The six primary areas of Civil Engineering Technology are structural, geotechnical, hydraulics, surveying, transportation and environmental engineering technology.

The Bachelor of Science (B.S) in Civil Engineering Technology curriculum at Fairleigh Dickinson offers a 50/50 combination of theoretical and laboratory course work. It emphasizes the application of mathematics, science and engineering principles to implementation, development and improvement of current technology. The program is most suitable for students who prefer applications and hands-on laboratory experience to theory. The degree is offered through the Gildart Haase School of Computer Sciences and Engineering, located within University College: Arts · Science · Professional Studies at the Metropolitan Campus.

Students who have a strong inclination toward math, science and technology, who simply like to tinker, or who are curious to know how things typically do well in engineering technology. A positive attitude, willingness to work hard, self-discipline, perseverance and high motivation play a major role in our students' academic success as well as in their engineering technology careers.

The B.S. in Civil Engineering Technology program is accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET. This program is the only ABET - accredited program of its kind in the state of New Jersey and is one of the only 31 such ABET - accredited programs in the entire country. Our program emphasizes applications, design and hands-on lab experience.

The educational objectives of the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Technology program define the career and professional accomplishments that the graduates are being prepared to achieve three to four years after graduation. The B.S. in Civil Engineering Technology program will produce graduates who:

• Enter into and advance their careers in the planning, design, construction, operation or maintenance of buildings and infrastructures utilizing their theoretical knowledge and practical skills in analyzing and designing systems or structures, specifying construction methods and materials, performing cost estimates and analyses, inspecting and managing civil projects.
• Continue their formal education and obtain advanced degrees such as M.S. in Construction Management, M.B.A (Industrial Management), M.S. in Environmental Studies, M.S. in Technology Management or other related fields.
• Continue to conduct themselves as both responsible professionals and global citizens, who are aware of and understand ethical issues and societal needs and problems.

Student Outcomes

Each civil engineering technology graduate will demonstrate the following attributes and achievements as required by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission (ETAC) of ABET upon or before graduation:

• An ability to apply knowledge, techniques, skills and modern tools of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to solve broadly-defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline;
• An ability to design systems, components, or processes meeting specified needs for broadly-defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline;
• An ability to apply written, oral, and graphical communication in broadly-defined technical and non-technical environments; and an ability to identify and use appropriate technical literature.
