专业概况
在这里学什么?The Master of Science degree in Psychology is designed to address the needs of two groups of students: students who wish to pursue doctoral studies and desire additional coursework and research experience in order to be more competitive for admission to doctoral programs, and students who need graduate-level training in order to be competitive for jobs in behavioral, psychological, and related research settings. The program is designed to give students extensive research experience and coursework in research methodology, statistics, and the content areas of research-based psychology (e.g., social, personality, cognitive, developmental, clinical).
If you are looking for a Masters degree in Psychology in traditionally research focused areas, you are looking at the right web site. The MS program offered by the Department of Psychology is designed to provide students with the statistical and methodological background to go on to a PhD program in traditionally research-oriented areas or to obtain MS-level jobs in applied research settings. Historically, the program has been very successful in this respect. The vast majority of our graduates have either obtained admission to a PhD program or a Psychology-related job, typically in research. Those who go on to doctoral work often attend top name schools in their subareas. Those who pursue MS level jobs frequently gain employment conducting research for Health Science centers, test and measures companies, or the military.
The MS provides training relevant to many of the traditionally research oriented areas of Psychology, including social, cognitive, developmental, clinical, health, and IO. However, we do not have separate tracks. The core classes are relevant to all areas, and tailoring of the program for different interests is done primarily through electives and research hours. A student wishing to pursue a PhD in social psychology may take different electives than one wishing to pursue a PhD in cognitive psychology or clinical psychology, but they will all take the same design and statistical courses.
The Master’s program is designed as a full time program, and is typically completed in 2 years (3 classes per semester). Classes are typically stacked on the same days to allow students time to perform data collection on the remaining days.
Degree Requirements
The minimum number of semester credit hours required for this degree, exclusive of coursework or other study required to remove admission deficiencies, is 36. Typically, students complete the program in two years (taking three courses a semester, excluding summers) or three years (taking two courses a semester, excluding summers).
