专业概况

The Department of Special Education offers master’s (M.Ed., M.A.) and doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees with a concentration in Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE). This concentration prepares students to be leading scholars through intensive mentoring from ECSE faculty, core content in ECSE and early language development, and rigorous training in research methods. Our training focuses on the use of Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions for supporting young children with autism and developmental disabilities and their families.

The master’s program in Early Childhood Special Education has a course sequence that facilitates special education teaching certification and is Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) approved. The program prepares individuals to be Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) and practitioners of evidence-based practices for young children with disabilities developing in natural environments.

The first year features course content focused on teaching young children with autism and developmental disabilities in natural environments, including approved coursework for obtaining BCBA certification. Students receive high-level training and practicum experiences that integrate the use of evidence-based practices such as Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions from leading scholars in the field. Students that have not already obtained special education teaching certification are eligible to complete subsequent coursework focused on curricular content and to complete student teaching placements in early childhood public school settings, with supervision from a BCBA.
