在这里学什么?The M.S.Ed. in CMHS provides a gateway to professional training in psychology, mental health counseling, school counseling, and/or research in these areas. The degree prepares students either to enter the Professional Counseling program at Penn GSE or to continue in a doctoral program at another university. The program is intended for full-time students only, though exceptions may be made for full-time Penn employees. Persons who wish to keep their full-time jobs should apply to the SMHC Executive Program.
This full-time, one-calendar-year master’s program is a gateway to professional training in psychology, mental health counseling, school counseling and/or research in these areas. The CMHS program is designed to prepare students to either 1) enter the Professional Counseling program at Penn GSE (see below); or 2) continue on to doctoral programs at other institutions. The program’s innovative format combines coursework with practical field experience in preparation for future roles as mental health professionals who provide counseling services for children, adolescents, college students, families, and adults. Students take core courses in counseling and human development in preparation for professional training in mental health counseling and related fields.
The Counseling and Mental Health Services (CMHS) M.S.Ed. Program requires a minimum of 10 course units of approved graduate work beyond the baccalaureate degree. In addition, all students must take a written comprehensive examination, and complete a two-semester practicum field placement. Students typically complete the requirements in two semesters plus a summer term.
Satisfactory grades in Introductory Psychology courses are desired for matriculation into the Counseling and Mental Health Services Program; however, we review and regularly accept applicants from all academic backgrounds.
A two-semester field placement provides the opportunity for students to learn and practice counseling skills in a professional and supportive environment. Students select placements from GSE’s pool of high-quality training sites including mental health centers, schools, hospitals, and colleges. Students receive supervision both on-site and in a small seminar group format.
The coursework and practical experience work together to reinforce the development of the student’s emerging professional identity and to prepare the student for a successful career in the field of counseling and mental health services. Counseling faculty serve as mentors and advisors, guiding students in their professional and academic development.
