专业概况

This program is also designed for students with specific objectives such as community college or secondary school teaching, journalism, public sector work, or government service and for those who want to think comparatively about the past and who are interested in studying the many linkages among world regions. It is intended particularly for students who neither require nor desire a Ph.D. degree. A broad program of study, which combines a specialized knowledge of at least one geographic region with the investigation of inter-regional processes and thematic comparisons, will be worked out in consultation with the student’s advisor.

Candidates for a M.A. in World History are required to do the following:

Complete a minimum of eight courses, which may include History 700 (with the instructor's permission) but must include: History 670, the Teaching of World History; at least one graduate level course that has a broad, trans-regional focus; at least one graduate level course with a comparative or thematic focus that has a broad geographical reach; at least one research seminar; and two additional graduate courses in the Department of History or other departments, as appropriate for the student’s special interests. One of these could be an independent study course.

Write a Master's thesis grounded in detailed regional knowledge but informed by attention to trans-regional influences and ties. The topic and methodology must be approved by the student’s advisor.

Pass a final examination based upon the Master's thesis and a statement of intellectual goals developed by the student and his or her advisor. This examination will be conducted by the candidate's academic advisor and at least one other Graduate Group faculty member.
